Why We Chose A Floor Bed For Our Toddler

A floor bed?

Yes. A floor bed. And no, we aren’t crazy. If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you know that our son has never been a great sleeper. We seem to go through sleep regression after sleep regression. And just when we think he is sleeping through the night, the cycle begins again. He is three.

To make matters worse, there is so much pressure placed on “sleeping” through the night, and what is considered

“normal.” In addition to being exhausted, we began to wonder, is something wrong? What should we be doing differently? He had his routine: dinner, play, bath, snack, stories, bed. And he’d still resist sleep, regardless. We started to explore other options.

A few months ago, we turned his crib into a toddler bed. He wasn’t too thrilled, so I quickly put his crib back together. From there things went downhill. He was sleeping in bed with us most nights, meaning he was sleeping but my husband and I were not. After a few up-all-nighters, we took him to IKEA to pick out his own big boy bed. We got him a toddler bed, mattress, pillow and cool sheets! But he just moved around too much at night for the toddler bed, hitting his head, waking himself up, and then hightailing it out of the bed. It just didn’t work. He began sleeping even less.

So we put a full size mattress on the floor next to our bed. It seems a little crazy, but it seems to be working. Here is why:

  • He is still in our room, but he has plenty of room to move around without rails.
  • The mattress is on the floor so, if he falls out of bed, it’s no biggie. And he has…
  • He is right next to us, so I can quickly hop out of bed and lay next to him, and it’s getting easier and easier for him to lay down and fall back asleep. That is what we hoped for.

So, yes, our arrangement is unconventional. And it will continue to be this way for the foreseeable future. And when the baby comes, we will likely all be in the same room, as long as  it works.

My message to you is this: if the “conventional” idea of how toddlers should sleep, and where toddlers should sleep, doesn’t work for you and your family, don’t do it. Figure out what is comfortable for you, your partner and your chlid(ren). Pay no mind to what your friends, family, neighbors, etc. have to say about how your family sleeps. Every child, every family, every human is unique and has different needs.

And don’t get discouraged, you may have to try a number of different arrangements to see what works best for you, and your family. If your child isn’t sleeping through the night by 6 weeks old, 6 months old, 2 years old…it is okay. It is NORMAL, no matter what others try to say. And don’t give up hope. I’ve heard that, one day, all children sleep (I don’t have personal experience with this, but we shall see).
