Taking a toddler to Las Vegas

Okay, I know some readers are going to give me the serious side-eye here. Taking a toddler to Las Vegas, a place known for the gambling, drinking and partying, sounds nuts. And, when I was younger, that is exactly what I loved to do there.

Las Vegas is a special place for me and my husband. We have traveled to Vegas a number of times, and have many special memories there. More importantly, we got married in Vegas more than four years ago. It is “our place.” Now that we have a little one, it has been hard to get back to Vegas since we got married. We don’t love traveling without him but taking a toddler to Las Vegas? Why not?

So, we did! This summer, for our 4th wedding anniversary, we took a family trip to Las Vegas, with our then two year old. We were initially concerned that it may be tough to keep a toddler entertained in Las Vegas, but we discovered there are quite a few fun, kid-friendly activities for toddlers in Vegas.

Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

We actually visited the Bellagio Conservatory twice. Brooks was in awe of the flowers, and the scenery. He loved being able to see the creations up close, and those hanging from the sky. There is so much for a toddler to take in and, better yet, it is free!

Swimming

Most hotels in Vegas have pools, and most pools have a kid-friendly/family-friendly area. If you plan to visit Las Vegas in the summer it gets hot. I mean, really hot. During our recent trip, it was well over 100 degrees each day. What better way to enjoy a hot day than by the pool with the family? This was one of Brooks’ favorite activities and, again, it was free!

Shark Reef Aquarium

This was my favorite part of the trip. We had the opportunity to visit the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay. Now this was a little pricey, at $25 per person, but I definitely think it was worth it. The aquarium is a decent size, but the shark reef was one of the neatest aquarium displays I have seen, with tons of different types of sharks, including goblin sharks and saw tooth sharks!

Animal Preserve at the Flamingo

Tucked away in the courtyard area of the Flamingo Hotel, you will find a little tropical escape, complete with turtles, gigantic fish, ducks and…flamingos! This is another activity that was really fun for all of us, and…free!

Arcades

There are a few different kid-friendly arcades in Las Vegas. The two with which I am most familiar are in the Excalibur Hotel, and Circus-Circus. Both feature a ton of fun kid-friendly arcades, with plenty of games for toddlers!

Other fun activities

There are so many fun things to do when taking a toddler to Las Vegas, but we were limited on time. They include: The Discovery Children’s Museum, Gondola at the Venetian, Sigfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, the Mirage volcano, the fountains at the Bellagio, and the list goes on. There is just so much for toddlers to look at, and enjoy.
