Things I Love

April Birchbox

Its time, once again, to review the products in this month’s Birchbox. For the April Birchbox, we were given a few options: A California Mad Men themed box, a New York Mad Men themed box, and the usual surprise box. I selected the New York Mad Men theme for my April Birchbox. Here is a quick rundown of this month’s goodies:

April Birchbox: Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel

The Product: Anastasia Beverly Hills, Clear Brow Gel, $22

The Claim: “…professionally polished brows with this translucent gel, rich in botanical conditioners.” Birchbox

The Test: I was eager to try this product. Immediately, I was happy with the scent of this product, and the consistency is very nice. Its thick enough to manage my crazy eyebrows, but not too thick. And its pliable when dry…no flakes here.

The Verdict:  While I love the overall performance of this brow gel, I prefer tinted brow gels. I need a product to darken my eyebrows. While I will keep this sample around for the summer months, I will not be purchasing this particular product.

April Birchbox: Beauty Protector Oil and ProtectThe Product: Beauty Protector, Protect & Oil, $25.95

The Claim: “…protects against UV rays and heat while keeping your style Park Avenue sleek.” Birchbox

The Test: When I first felt this oil, my initial thought was, “Hell no, I am not putting this in my hair. I am greasy enough as it is.” But then, I decided to give it a try. I rubbed two drops through the ends of my damp hair before blow drying.

The Verdict: I am pleasantly surprised. After blowdrying my hair, there was so sign of the oil. Instead my hair smelled great, and the ends of my hair were soft and shiny. I may actually have to purchase this, as I can see using it on a regular basis.

April Birchbox: Cargo Swimmables BlushThe Product: Cargo, Swimmables Water Resistant Blush in Los Cabos, $26

The Claim: “…waterproof pigment stays put–even through a three Martini lunch.” Birchbox

The Test: This is the product I was looking forward to the most! I have been looking for a good peachy blush for summertime. This blush is well pigmented, and has a touch of shimmer. Best of all, it is waterproof, so it should stay put during those hot summer months.Cargo swimmables blush in Los Cabos

The Verdict: I love everything about this blush…except the color. It just has too much orange for my skin tone. But I may be seeking out a different color, since I love everything else about this product!

April Birchbox: Liz Earle Eyebright LotionThe Product: Liz Earle, Eyebright Soothing Eye Lotion, $25

The Claim:”…uses ultra calming botanicals to soothe, refresh and depuff tired eyes.” Birchbox

The Reality: I don’t generally deal with tired, puffy eyes, but I was happy to give this a try. The consistency is much more like a serum, than a lotion. It is applied to the eye area using a cotton ball.

The Verdict: I can’t really tell if this has made much a difference in my eye area. It IS very cooling and refreshing. Since this product isn’t really something I need, I won’t be purchasing it.

April Birchbox: Whish Shave Crave in BlueberryThe Product: Whish, Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Blueberry, $20

The Claim:”…shea butter-packed shaving cream in an exclusive blueberry scent.” Birchbox

The Reality: I have never been one to use shave creams. I generally stick with soaps and shower gels for shaving. I was excited to use this product, especially with the promise that it would be hydrating. This shaving cream smells amazing. And I assumed it would lather, once water was added.

The Verdict: Nope. This product didn’t lather well, and I actually felt that it was rather drying. I can’t imagine paying $20 for this lackluster product.

All-in-all, the April Birchbox came with some pleasant surprises, and some disappointments. In the future, I will stick with the “surprise” boxes, rather than selecting a thematic box. It is much more fun to be completely surprised by Birchbox’s selections. Until next time…
