A Second Time Mom’s Must Haves for Baby

One of the biggest differences between my first pregnancy and my second pregnancy is the list of must haves for baby.

As a second time mommy, I already have so much baby gear from when Brooks was a baby. When I was pregnant the first time, I had a lengthy list of all of the “things” I thought I needed for him. Looking back, we really only used a fraction of the things we purchased. Thinking that we wouldn’t be having another baby, we even sold quite a few things (a baby bouncer, our Jolly Jumper), and took a load of baby stuff to the Goodwill.

As we prepare for this baby, I have a short list of must haves for baby. My list is more “minimalist” in nature. I only want to purchase items that will help me to care for our newborn, and manage life with a toddler and a baby!

A Second Time Mom’s Must Haves For Baby

A double stroller

This isn’t something we have purchased yet, and we will probably wait until after the little one arrives, but a double stroller is going to be a must have. Brooks is still pretty young, and when we do anything that involves a lot of walking, we take the stroller. Add a baby to the mix, and a double stroller is going to be a must have. I love the Chicco BravoFor2 Standing/Sitting Double Stroller for a few reasons. A) The baby is going to be using the Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat. You can pop this car seat right out of the base, and right into the Chicco BravoFor2  stroller. This function is so convenient, and something that we really appreciated when Brooks was an infant. And this stroller features a seat/standing platform for Brooks. Since he is so active, I know he will love the flexibility to sit or stand (safely) in the stroller.

A baby swing

We didn’t have a swing for Brooks. I didn’t really see a need for one.  Now that we are welcoming a second baby, a swing is going to be a necessity. I am a work from home mom, and there will be times when I need to occupy both Brooks and the baby. I am praying that the swing will do the trick. My mom recently bought the swing I have had my eyes on for a while now, the Fisher-Price Sweet Surroundings Monkey Cradle ‘n Swing. This swing has a number of features I really like. It moves forward and backward like a traditional swing, but also moves from side to side like a cradle. This swing features vibration, and sound, and it plugs into the wall so we won’t go through a million batteries!

A baby carrier

Confession: I already have two baby carriers. I have an Ergobaby 360 Baby Carrier and Infant Insert, which I love, and a Baby K’tan, which I don’t love. I plan to use the Ergo 360 again, once the baby gets a bit bigger, but I need a more secure wrap-style carrier for the newborn/infant stage. I plan to wear the baby often, as I continue to take Brooks to our typical activities (story time, the park, etc). I have my sights on this adorable Moby Wrap , because I love that it is beautiful, secure and versatile.

A baby monitor/second camera

Another important item on my must have’s for baby is an additional camera for our baby monitor. We already have a baby monitor that we love, the Motorola MBP36S Remote Wireless Video Baby Monitor . This Motorola monitor doesn’t connect to Wifi, which was a major concern for us, and the safety of our home. We can see and hear our munchkins clearly, and the monitor is easy to use.  Brooks will soon be moving to his own bedroom, so we will need two separate cameras: one for Brooks’ room, and one for the baby. This Motorola monitor system allows us to simply add one more camera to the mix, and I can toggle between them.

Baby bathtub

For the sake of cleanliness, I got rid of Brooks’ infant tub. I mean, after more than a year of potty accidents in the bathtub, I’d prefer a new, fresh bathtub for the baby. I have my sights set on the Cushy Nest Cloud Infant Bather.  Brooks’ bathtub was cute, and functional, but it was big, and annoying to store.  This is little bath “nest” means I can bathe the baby in the sink, or the bathtub, safely. And then it folds up neatly for storage! Even better, the cushion is removable for washing!
